when natasha and i got married in 2016, we were still figuring things out.

we didn’t have the budget for a crazy honeymoon or savings to get a house. but we had enough to fulfill one crazy idea. let’s go on a road trip from park city, utah (where we got married) to dallas, tx (where my parents were living at the time) and hit up every single national park within reason.

we spent a month on the road with our beloved pup, big paw (who was also our ring bearer and de facto best man). we used some of the proceeds to get ourselves cameras - matching sony bridge cameras. and we took them everywhere.

white surface was shot at the white sands national park in new mexico. it felt like we were treading on virgin earth. the sands were largely untouched - until we let big paw off leash and he tore the park apart.

but the skies were largely cloudless and the sand was mostly untouched. sky blue on sharp white. and when we needed a music video for a song we called “white surface”, it just made sense. the gods of creativity throwing me an alley oop.

and because the palette was so simple - sky blue and sharp white, i could play with effects and layers in final cut to create weird collage-like images. crude attempts at digital painting, if you will. but anytime i meet someone who happened to google me ahead of time, they bring this video up as something that caught their attention.

it’s like a bedroom demo getting more plays than your studio recording. there’s an innocence in the music and the video that feel perfect together. i don’t say this is something i ‘created’ but rather something that i witnessed being made.
