“Art is the catalyst of social change and innovation.” This is Rob’s motto. And to create art requires two core elements — the spirits of love and creation. At his gallery in Hyde Park, Rob has created the anti-art gallery. Everyone is welcome. Come as you are. You don’t have to buy anything. Just show up as yourself.
Like most of our subjects, Rob doesn’t like being on camera. He doesn’t like to talk about himself. That requires learning how to move with Rob — to invite the natural Rob out and get him talking on film.
During pre-production, we learned about a project he was working on that was short one key element — speakers. So we came to Rob’s shoot with a gift. Showing up with the spirit of love and the intention to create. We spent nearly four hours together setting up the speakers, testing them, rearranging the room. That whole time, Rob knew a shoot was coming — but he was thinking about what had been made possible. The excitement turned to spiritual openness. And then to Rob telling us he was ready to get on camera and talk.
It’s not manipulation. There are no psychological tricks. Just a filmmaker learning about his subject and creating the conditions for that subject to be their best self.
